Oakland Raiders would be foolish to lose Michael Bush
Whenever a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is finalized, the free agency period will start, and the Oakland raiders would be foolish to allow RB Michael Bush to leave the organization. Raiders owner Al Davis praised Bush while speaking to the media earlier this week, saying how he loves the way that Bush and McFadden compliment each other so well.
Davis went on to say that Bush’s size wears down opposing defenses and “by the third and fourth quarters, (teams) don’t want to tackle Bush in the secondary”. I have to agree, but the real reason that the Raiders need to keep Michael Bush was never stated. Darren McFadden.
Darren McFadden finally had the breakout season that Raiders fans have been waiting to see for three seasons, but McFadden has a tendency to get banged up during the course of the regular season. McFadden has never played a complete 16 game regular season during his three year career and Bush provides a very nice insurance policy when McFadden is unavailable to go. For example, in week 17 against the Kansas City Chiefs with McFadden on the sideline, Bush carried the rock 25 times for 137 yards and a score.
When the pair are teamed up, they combined to help the Raiders achieve the second best rushing attack in the league, averaging 155 yards per game.
Bush will be in demand from several teams once free agency starts. In three seasons, he has only carried the ball 376 times, so there is not a lot of wear and tear on his body. In can think that the Miami Dolphins could pursue Bush’s services, especially with both Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown likely gone as free agents.
Running back is one of the more “plug and play” positions on a NFL team, and talent can be found in later rounds, even at times in the undrafted free agent ranks, but it would be wise for the Raiders to retain Michael Bush for 2011 and beyond.
