During a segment on Inside the NFL on Showtime, a show that Phil Simms serves as an analyst on, he revealed an interesting piece of news.
Al Davis once offered him the position of head coach of the Oakland Raiders.
“He did offer me to become a Raiders coach, and to be their head coach. I got interviewed over the phone for many, many hours,”
Simms has never coached at any level and envisioned the situation ending badly for himself and the Raiders.
“Of course I turned it down,”
Simms said. “I’m glad I did because how bitter would I be if I got hired and fired a few times?”
Simms is currently enjoying a career as an analyst on CBS where he has been nominated as recently as last year for a Sports Emmy as an outstanding game analyst. There is no doubt that Simms is one of the best at what he does and it would have been foolish for him to give up what is shaping up to be a lucrative career for the sake of a head coaching position with a muddled franchise.
Simms and Jim Nantz will be calling the game on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills on CBS.
