Rolovich to coach quarterbacks at Hawaii
IFormer Hawaii quarterback Nick Rolovich is returning to the Warriors as one of coach Greg McMackin's first hires.
Rolovich will serve as quarterbacks coach and will groom Tyler Graunke as the Warriors' starter.
The 28-year-old Rolovich succeeds coach Dan Morrison, who recently left Hawaii for Southern Methodist to join the staff of former Hawaii coach June Jones.
Rolovich served as quarterbacks coach at City College of San Francisco, where he helped guide the Rams to a J.C. Gridwire National Championship last year.
"I'm blessed to have this opportunity to come back to UH to coach this great style of football," he said. "This is a great place to be and I'm fortunate coach McMackin is giving me this chance to coach my alma mater."
Rolovich started the 2001 season as Hawaii's third-string quarterback but finished setting 19 school records. He got the start after Timmy Chang broke his wrist and backup Jared Flint played poorly.
Rolovich went 8-1 as a starter and passed for 3,361 yards, 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions, finishing fourth in the nation in total offense and 10th in passing efficiency.
In the season finale victory over then-undefeated Brigham Young, Rolovich threw for 543 yards and a school-record eight touchdowns.
After Hawaii, Rolovich signed with the Denver Broncos, but was released after the team's final preseason game in 2002. The next year, he was allocated to the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe, where he threw for 907 yards and led the Fire to World Bowl XI.
Rolovich returned to the Broncos in 2003 and was cut following training camp. He then began a five-year career in the Arena Football League with San Jose SaberCats, Chicago Rush, Arizona Rattlers and the Las Vegas Gladiators.
The native of Novato, Calif., served as an assistant coach for San Marin (Calif.) High School in 2002 and was a graduate assistant at Hawaii from 2003-04.
