Hawaii Strategy and Personnel
SPRING AHEAD: The Warriors must rebuild their offense after losing quarterback Colt Brennan and all four of his starting wide receivers, many of whom likely will find homes in the NFL. Last year's backup quarterback, Tyler Graunke, has some experience and could start this year. However, the arrival of two junior-college quarterbacks indicates coaches might be looking elsewhere.
PRO POTENTIAL:
QB Colt Brennan -- The Warriors quarterback finished third in Heisman Trophy voting and will get a long look from NFL scouts. However, he had a rough outing in the Sugar Bowl and struggled in the Senior Bowl, where he was 2 of 6 with an interception.
WRs Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen and Jason Rivers -- All three standouts were invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Bess and Grice-Mullen left Hawaii after their junior years and could turn into Wes Welker-type threats out of the slot. Rivers is a big-bodied outside receiver with a knack for making plays in big games.
ROSTER REPORT:
--Cal Lee has been named defensive coordinator under coach Greg McMackin, who previously held that title. Lee has been an assistant at Hawaii for five years since a distinguished career at nearby St. Louis High.
--The Warriors return five of their 11 All-WAC first-teamers, including linebackers Adam Leonard and Solomon Elimimian. The others are offensive lineman John Estes, defensive lineman David Veikune and kicker Dan Kelly.
