Camps aim to connect with local youth talent (Honolulu Star-Bulletin) Soon enough, Greg McMackin's focus will be fixed solely on the challenges immediately ahead of the Hawaii football team, most prominently, a season-opening trip to The Swamp to face Florida.

Redskins' future hinges on the Campbell-Zorn connection (USA Today) After the Washington Redskins' final session of OTAs (organized team activities) in June, the player who might well be the key to whatever success the team has this season stood outside in the shadows of the team facility and, almost in rote fashion, provided answers to the same questions that have shadowed him throughout his college and NFL careers.

32 burning questions for each NFL team (Fox Sports) No team is airtight. Every squad has issues. Peter Schrager offers up a solution to a burning question facing each NFL team.

Loose ends: Brennan wins on coolness

I spoke with Hawaii's Colt Brennan for awhile at Saturday night's Heisman ceremony. He had the line of the night. When I asked him whether he thought playing in Hawaii hurt his chances for the Heisman, he responded with a laugh: "I don't know. I have no regrets. I went to the University of Hawaii for three years. The way I see it — the joke's on everyone else."

You know what? He's right.

When relaying the line to a couple of friends, my buddy Mike noted, "Seems like a pretty cool guy." To this, my friend Bryan answered, "His name is Colt Brennan. Is there any chance a guy named Colt Brennan isn't going to be a cool guy? He could be in the life insurance world and be a cool guy."

Fair point.

Everyone knows Colt Brennan's career accomplishments. The single-season Division I-A passing touchdown record; the career Division I-A passing touchdown record; 23 other Division 1-A records; an undefeated season, etc. That's all good and well. Is Colt Brennan an NFL quarterback, though?

I think so. Having watched several Hawaii games over the past three seasons, I've become absolutely enamored with the way he throws a football. It's unlike most other quarterbacks I've seen. The release it most resembles is Kerry Collins' motion, and even that is a stretch.

The scouts and NFL writers are going to pick apart his throwing style come February. That's almost as definite as taxes, death, and another Lindsay Lohan meltdown. But that shouldn't deter teams from going with the guy. Most draft pundits I've spoken to have Colt Brennan listed as a late second-, early third-round draft pick.

Personally, with the absolute dearth of quality QB's in the league — as made evident in an NFL week where Brock Berlin, Chris Redman, and two McCown brothers started games — I can't see him slipping out of the first round. Colt Brennan has a fantastic touch and one of the quicker releases you'll see.

Sure, he's not built like Tim Tebow or Vince Young. And no, he doesn't have the arm of a Jay Cutler. But he's a special quarterback — and certainly one I can see manning an NFL squad in future years.

My top 10 senior quarterback NFL draft prospects? The list goes like this:

1. Brian Brohm, Louisville
2. Colt Brennan, Hawaii
3. Matt Ryan, Boston College
4. Andre Woodson, Kentucky
5. John David Booty, USC
6. Joe Flacco, Delaware
7. Chad Henne, Michigan
8. Erik Ainge, Tennessee
9. Denis Dixon, Oregon
10. Jeremy Young, Southern Miss

All of them but Brian Brohm and Dixon have another football game left in their college careers. In Flacco's case, it's the Division I-AA Championship Game on Saturday versus Appalachian State. If you haven't seen this kid play yet, don't miss that chance. He's outstanding.

For everyone else, it's one more bowl game. Jeremy Young gets it all going in December 22nd's PapaJohns.com bowl and Colt Brennan wraps 'em all up in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. If you're into quarterback play, try to catch each kid's final game over the next few weeks.

# Missouri's Chase Daniel seems to get it. He's majoring in business and pretty much handled that media session as smoothly as any college student ever could. Composed, humorous, assertive. When asked about the "spread" system like it was some sort of freakish anomaly, he stepped up and explained, "It's new, yes. But it's now the staple in college football." It was like he was responding to someone asking him about this wacky new thing called the Internet. I liked Daniel a lot. On top of looking like a spitting image of Jason from "Laguna Beach," he seems to be a natural leader. Pete Fiutak has him right up there with Tim Tebow as a Heisman contender for next year. I can't argue with that.

# I'd love to tell you that when the cameras turn off and the spotlight is elsewhere, Tim Tebow has a wild side and isn't the angelic figure he's been painted as all year. But that would be a lie. What did Tebow do the day before he won the Heisman? Well, he wasn't at Marquee or Scores with his buddies until 3 a.m. Instead, he was on one of those double decker buses, taking a tour around Manhattan. Yep, seeing the Empire State Building. I asked one of the Gators' beat writers what they thought he'd be doing after the award ceremony on Saturday night. "Probably drinking milk and eating cookies." I think she was kidding. But I'm honestly not sure.

# Speaking of Tebow, it's funny what a difference four months make. Here's what I wrote in a column printed on September 5th, back when people actually worried whether or not the sophomore could fill in for Chris Leak in a full-time role:

"Tim Tebow's got an arm. It seems that somewhere along the way, everyone forgot that long before he was a running quarterback that bulldozed over LSU safeties and did weird sorta-kinda jump passes, Tim Tebow was one of the most prolific passing quarterbacks in American high school football history. Just how good a gunslinger was Tebow at Nease High School? Florida's Mr. Football in 2005 had 9,810 career passing yards and 95 passing touchdowns. Ninety five passing touchdowns ... in high school! Unheard of. Florida's preseason critics seem to be pointing to Tebow as a potential sore spot, writing him off as nothing more than a fullback under center. That's not fair. He's going to shock some folks with his arm in '07."

Yes, Tebow certainly was a "potential sore spot" for the Gators this year.

# A pretty good article from a guy who did not have Tim Tebow on his Heisman ballot:

# In case you were wondering, defensive players Glenn Dorsey and Chris Long finished in the top 10 of Saturday's Heisman voting. Dorsey finished ninth; Long 10th. And Elvis Dumervil — the only defensive player to finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting over the past 15 years not to be a first-round draft pick — had three sacks against the Chiefs on Sunday. I said it last week and I'll say it again — expect huge things from Dorsey and Long at the next level.

# Nine voters had Matt Ryan ranked first on their Heisman ballots. It makes you wonder if nine voters had been asleep since late October.

# ESPN aired Sunday's PBA bowling tour live from the infield of Milwaukee's Miller Park. It was fantastic. No, not the bowling. But the sight of that crowd actually being outside. It was likely the first time in decades that gang's seen the sun.

# Jason Whitlock compared Reggie Bush to Eric Metcalf in his column last week. Does that mean Mike Karney is "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell? If only Karney could be so lucky.

# Sometimes you forget how incredible Chris Farley really was. I was reminded last Wednesday night. Because of the writer's strike, NBC's been running old episodes of "The Tonight Show" from the early '90's. They're fabulous. George Clooney, "the star of 'E.R.'", was a secondary guest on one episode, while Tyra Banks came on in another and wasn't absolutely bat crazy. Farley's appearance from the Super Bowl back in 1996 was the best, though. He comes out diving on the floor for an imaginary fumble, sweats like a maniac, and does a spot-on impression of a high school football coach. He then tickled and caressed a football for about a minute. Brilliant. I've been searching YouTube all week for the clip, but all I can find are these 18 seconds from the end of the episode. Those 18 seconds are funnier than anything we've seen on Leno's show in the last decade.

# Curious coaching decisions abound in the NFL this season. Mangini's getting it bad this week for his clock management against Cleveland, and Sean Payton caught some grief for running a double reverse with the lead late in the game last week against Tampa. But how about the Eagles' Andy Reid on Sunday? Down three, late in the game, on their own 40-yard-line on third-and-8, the Eagles run the ball up the gut for a yard. Clock continues to tick, tick, tick, and no real yards are gained. Sure enough, on fourth down, McNabb throws an incomplete pass that would have been short of the first down had it been caught, anyway.

# Forced NFL Studio Show Laugh of the Week: Kudos, Bob Costas. You take home the award this week. With the Colts leading the Ravens 37-7 at the half on Sunday night, Cris Collinsworth noted that Colts fans and his mom and dad were the only ones still watching. Mr. Costas enjoyed this thoroughly. He showed his enjoyment with a nice, hearty chuckle.
