Oakland Raiders Believe Sebastian Janikowski’s Record-Tying Field Goal Was From 64 Yards; Will Appeal Spot of the Ball
Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski made history on Monday night against the Denver Broncos after drilling a 63-yard field goal right before halftime–which tied former Saints kicker Tom Dempsey and former Broncos kicker Jason Elam for the longest kick in NFL history. While a moment like this is quite the accomplishment for Janikowski, the Raiders believe their beloved kicker actually has the record for himself.
According to Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders plan on appealing the spot of the ball with the league–claiming that Janikowski set the record himself and drilled the field goal from 64 yards instead of 63 yards. As crazy as it sounds, Janikowski’s last-second attempt before halftime turned out to be a key factor in the game considering the Raiders went on to win the game 23-20.
Since joining the Raiders in 2000, Janikowski has always been considered to have one of the strongest legs in the NFL and even managed to drill a field goal from 61 yards in 2009. Even if the league rejects Oakland’s appeal–Janikowski will always be proud that he made a name for himself in the record books by tying the longest field goal.
