Hawaii receives 1,000 extra Sugar Bowl tickets

HONOLULU (AP) -- The University of Hawaii will receive an additional 1,000 Sugar Bowl tickets to help address a shortfall caused by an earlier decision not to accept its full allotment of 17,500.

Bowl officials have committed to a total of 1,500 extra tickets for the New Year's Day game between No. 10 Hawaii and No. 4 Georgia, including 500 sent last week.

Tickets will be sold to Warriors season-ticket holders who were placed on a waiting list last week before the school ceased adding names because of "excessive demand."

Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier said the additional tickets should accommodate most or all of the people on the waiting list.

"The demand for tickets has been incredible and we thank our season-ticket holders for their patience and the Allstate Sugar Bowl for working with us to acquire additional seats," he said.

Hawaii did not receive its full allotment of tickets because of concerns that the school could not sell them all, so 4,000 were accepted by Georgia.

With Hawaii quickly selling out its reduced allotment of 13,500 tickets in two days, many angry fans and season-ticket holders were left scrambling to find tickets to the school's first bowl game outside the Aloha State since the 1992 Holiday Bowl.

Only 8,500 of the initial allotment made it to season-ticket holders because 5,000 were reserved for the university, travel packages and corporate sponsors.

Tickets were never made available to the general public in Hawaii.

Led by quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan, the Warriors (12-0) earned a BCS berth to face the Bulldogs (10-2) after finishing as the nation's only unbeaten team.
